Why Teamwork Is More Important Than Talent in Youth Volleyball
In a world driven by technology, instant gratification, and constant connection, it is easy for young athletes to develop a "me first" mentality. Social media often celebrates individual accomplishments, statistics, and personal recognition. But at LIV Volleyball Club, we believe there is something even more valuable than talent alone: a team-first mindset.
Are We Born Selfish, or Is It Learned?
Human nature naturally focuses on self, but character, leadership, and teamwork can be taught and developed. In youth sports, athletes are constantly faced with a choice:
Will I put myself first, or will I put the team first?
While talent can help win points, culture and character are what sustain success over an entire season.
What Our Players Believe
At LIV Volleyball Club, we surveyed our athletes and found some encouraging results:
86% said that a teammate's bad attitude affects how they play.
87% believe one person cannot win games by themselves.
91% believe a team cannot achieve its goals when teammates don't get along on the court.
91% believe teamwork is more important than individual talent.
These responses reinforce something we have believed from the very beginning:
Volleyball Is the Ultimate Team Sport
Unlike some sports where a superstar can take over a game, volleyball requires trust and contribution from everyone on the court. Even the most talented athlete depends on teammates to pass, set, defend, communicate, and compete together.
Success in volleyball is never about one player—it is about six players working as one.
A great hitter depends on a great pass. A great setter depends on teammates who are ready to attack. Defenders rely on blockers, and blockers rely on defenders. In volleyball, every player's attitude, effort, and willingness to put the team first directly affect the success of everyone around them.
That is why we believe volleyball is the ultimate team sport.
Setting the Standard at LIV Volleyball Club
From the day LIV Volleyball Club was founded, we have been intentional about building more than skilled athletes. We are committed to developing players who understand that success is not just measured by wins and losses, but by how they serve and support those around them.
We teach our athletes that:
Attitude matters.
Teammates matter.
Accountability matters.
Character matters.
No one is bigger than the team.
At LIV, we strive to raise athletes who are more concerned with what they can contribute than with what they can receive.
We believe that representing our team, serving our teammates, and contributing to something bigger than ourselves matters more than personal statistics, individual awards, or recognition. While individual accomplishments have value, they should never come at the expense of the team.
We want our athletes to understand that success is not simply about standing out, but about showing up for others. We believe that the greatest players are those who make everyone around them better.
Because when players choose to put the team above self, everybody wins.
The LIV Award: Recognizing Team-First Players
At our recent End of Season Ceremony, we celebrated athletes who exemplify the culture we are striving to build through the presentation of the LIV Award.
The LIV Award recognizes the athlete who consistently puts the team above self and best represents the culture of LIV Volleyball Club.
This award is about much more than statistics or individual achievements. It honors athletes who:
Encourage their teammates.
Lead by example.
Celebrate the success of others.
Show humility and sportsmanship.
Remain coachable.
Choose unity over personal recognition.
Understand that great teams are built on sacrifice and trust.
By recognizing and celebrating these qualities, we are intentionally reinforcing the standard we want to see throughout our club.

Why Teamwork Is Just as Important as Talent
Talent may help a player stand out, but teamwork allows a team to thrive.
Every coach wants talented athletes, but even more importantly, coaches want athletes who are dependable, unselfish, and committed to something bigger than themselves.
Championships are rarely won by the most talented individuals. They are won by teams that trust one another, communicate well, and choose to put the group ahead of personal agendas.
Building Athletes for Life
At LIV Volleyball Club, our mission extends far beyond the volleyball court.
We want to help develop young people who will become great teammates, leaders, spouses, parents, employees, and members of their communities. Learning to put others first is a life skill that will serve them long after their playing days are over.
Because while trophies eventually collect dust, the impact of a life marked by perseverance, humility, and selflessness lasts forever.
And that is the culture we are committed to building.
